Zion National Park - Great White Throne
One of the great benefits of living in the St. George area, is the ability to get to outdoor areas in short order. Hiking and biking trails are within minutes of most any home in the St. George area. However, it is great that Zion National Park (America’s #1 National Park – according to Trip Advisor) is just 38 miles away. Hikes like Angel’s Landing, The Narrows, Observation Point and others are all doable on any given day. In fact, it would be easy to leave home at 6:00 a.m., and hike one of these trails and be done and home around lunch-time. Or even take off after work and hike one of Zion National Park’s trails and be home by bed-time.
In mid-summer you would have enough light to finish your hike, while in winter months you could bring along a light for later afternoon/evening hikes. Zion National Park is just 30 miles east of Interstate 15 (I-15) and that makes it a close weekend getaway for people from Salt Lake City, Las Vegas and even the Los Angeles / San Diego area. In fact 20-to-25% of the visitors to Zion are from southern California.
Winter is coming on and this is my favorite time for hiking. Day-time temperatures are predominantly in the 50’s and 60’s and this is ideal weather for hiking. The leaves on the trees in Zion’s main canyon are gone and this makes it easier to see wildlife in the valley. Deer and wild turkeys are some of the larger animals commonly seen. Winter is also a time when you can drive you own vehicle into the main canyon and stop where you choose. The number of visitors to Zion is much smaller and you will have a much more serene experience in Zion National Park at this time of year. So it’s time to get out and visit Zion National Park again.
